The River Stinchar is one of the most productive of the west coast salmon rivers. Although largely a spate river the Ballantrae beat is tidal up to the old road bridge and fresh run salmon can enter the famous Bridge Pool even in very low water. During the summer months it is occasionally possible to count two to three hundred fish lying under the old bridge at Ballantrae. The salmon fishing season runs from February 26th until October 31st although there is an occasional Spring fish the salmon do not generally enter the river in any numbers before June. The average size of Stinchar Salmon is 8-9 pounds with a few larger fish.

This is a very attractive river to fish, every pool has a character of its own, and in recent years some have been very much improved and hold salmon even in low water. There is a great change in the scenery from the wooded banks beside Big Jean to the estuary and the sea birds to be seen at McCord. Steps lead down from Windyknowe to Diana’s Pool and there is a good path along the north bank for the whole of the top beat. The lower beat is easily accessible on foot from the house or by car.
